News from Mrs. Straw

Events:
-Jan. 20 No School (MLK Day)
-Jan. 23 Sub (I will be in the building doing testing all day)
-Jan. 28 100th Day

-Feb. 12 2 hr. early out

What’s Happening in BUILD:
***We continued the same build this week.  On Thursday and Friday we learned a new math game to practice counting money.  It is called Penny, Nickel Dime Exchange.  A student rolls a die and then takes the appropriate amount of pennies.  When they have 5 pennies to can trade for a nickel, when they have 10 pennies or 2 nickels they can trade for a dime. 
B (Buddy Games)- Top it with greater than, equal to, and less than symbols.  Students flip over a card and record which number is greater.
U (Using Manipulatives)- More Before and After.  Students draw a number and record the two numbers before and after their number on the card.
I (Indpendently Working)-Fact Family Houses
L (Learning with Numbers)- Problem solving by adding specific amount of tens
D-(Doing Math)- Scootpad on laptops

What’s Happening in Daily 5:
*Listen to Reading (Bookflix)
*Read to Self (How to Talk to Your Snowman and Perhaps…)
*Read to Someone
*Word Work
        -Highlight specific features in   
           Poems
        -Practice reading sight words and
          Phrases
       -Word Journeys (cut and sort words
         and write sentences with words)
*We will be using our work on writing time during our class writing block.

Week in Review:
- This week we learned about contractions with not.  We played a game on the smartboard to help us learn this new concept. 

Notes:
-Thank you to the families that attended our literacy night on Tuesday.  It was great to see families reading together. 

-The pajama drive has started.  Please send in new pajamas and a book to be donated to Palo Alto County Hospital or Mason City Hospital.
