Week of May 13


Upcoming Events:
J May 24 Field Trip to Nature Center (rescheduled due to rain this week)-Depart at 8:30---Please have your child wear good walking shoes and dress in layers.  If you signed up for your child to bring a cold lunch from home please send things in reusable containers.
JMay 24 1 hour early out due to the Memorial Day weekend
JMay 29 Last Day (dismissal at 11:00)
Classroom awards at 8:30 and attendance and track and field day awards at 8:55.

Notes:
JWe had a wonderful root beer floats on Friday to celebrate those that read 100 books! 

Things to Work on:
J Reading books for fun!

What we have been up to:
Reading: This week we practiced some track meet words for fun.  Next week will be our last spelling test for the year.  During our reading time we completed some end of year assessments and began putting our portfolios together. 
Math: This week we finished our last math unit.  We will take our test next week.  Students really enjoyed this unit on measurement.
Science/ Social Studies: We have started our new social studies unit on meeting people.  We have discussed the new vocabulary word: immigrant.  This week students worked with a partner to compare a different country to Iowa.  Some examples of countries that students are comparing are: Madagascar, Nigeria, Mexico, and Canada.  We are comparing food, land, clothing, and holidays.

Week of May 6

Notes:
JI will be gone May 9 and 10.  Mrs. Brennan will be the sub in the room.  There will be no AR books sent home those days.  I will check them when I return.
J As we our entering the last few weeks of school please make sure that your child has all of their library books returned to the library.  If books are not returned by the end of the year you will need to pay for the book.

J Counting Money with quarters

What we have been up to:
Reading: We started this week talking about the life cycle of a butterfly.  Our spelling skill this week is /au/ and /aw/.  We will continue this skill through next week.  We will not have a spelling test this Friday due to the track meet and will test on these words next Friday, the 17th
Math: This week we continued talking about inches and will introduce centimeters.  Students are doing very well at measuring with inches on a ruler.
Science/ Social Studies: At the beginning of the week we finished talking about the Earth.  We talked about the prefix re and what it means: to do something again.  We also learned about a few other prefixes.  Students were also able to make a book about the Earth from things that they have learned.  We have also started a new unit about meeting people.  This unit will involve us comparing our culture to another culture of a student’s choice.
