Week in Review:

Reading: This week we learned about the /oo/ sound. We played a smartboard game and highlighted words with this sound in a book.

Math:  We have finished our study on two-digit addition.  Students took the test on Thursday with the sub and she praised them for how hard they worked.  To celebrate their hard work on Friday we had some math centers.  We worked with geoboards, straws and twist ties to make shapes, drew objects with shape templates, and used pattern blocks.

Science:  In science we have started our new unit about engineering.  We learned the definition of an engineer and technology.  We are learning about how to engineer a package to hold our plants so that they can continue growing.

Notes:
- I will have a sub on Wednesday, April 30 while I am testing all first graders in the building.

Notes:
-We had a great field trip to the Sugar Shack in Algona.  Students learned how to tap a tree to get sap and the turn the sap into syrup.  We were able to use some of the syrup we made for lunch when we ate at the Chrome in Algona.  Please check out my blog for pictures.

Sugar Shack Field Trip

The buckets that are collecting sap.

The Sugar Shack where they make sap into syrup.

In her hand is the tap that they pound into the tree and then attach the bucket to for the sap to run into.

Drilling a hole in the tree for the sap to run out of.

Students collected sap from the tree buckets in these white buckets.  Students then carried the sap from the tree to the Sugar Shack.

Students dumped the sap into a filter to get out some of the bugs and leaves.  The sap then went into a big basin which the pumped into the sugar shack.

Inside the Sugar Shack they showed up the filter that they use to cook the sap into syprup.

Each student got given a small sample cup to taste the syrup.

All the first graders

Eating pancakes at the Chrome in Algona.  Students enjoyed getting to use some of the syrup we made with their pancakes.

We toured a museum in West Bend where we learned about things of the past.  This student tried on a hat from the past.

Trying out an old typewriter.

We toured a one room school house.

We learned about how schools were in the past.  One of the things that we learned was about the Dunce hat.
