Week of Sept. 16

Upcoming Events:
*Sept. 25 School Picture Day
*Sept. 27 1 hr. early out (Homecoming Parade) School Spirit Day
* Oct. 9 2 hr. early out
Notes:
*We started spelling.  A pretest was given on Monday.  If a student passed the pretest they do have to complete the spelling homework in the week but do not have to take the posttest on Friday.  I will send home the checked pretest each Monday attached to their spelling homework.  Students are to work on their spelling contracts each day.
*Homecoming is next week please watch for a flyer notifying you of scheduled days of the week.
Things to Work on:
*Identifying even and odd numbers
*Using decoding strategies to help solve an unknown word: chunk the word into parts they know or stretch out the sounds.
What we have been up to:
Reading: This week we continued to review beginning, middle, and end parts of stories.  We also practiced sorting words into the –at and –an word families.
Math: We practiced counting on from 5 to make the numbers 6,7,8, 9, and 10.  We have started BUILD (Buddy Games, Using Manipulative, Independently Working, Learning about Numbers, and Doing Math).  Students have started scootpad in math.   I am sending home a letter with their password that you can use at home.  While students are busy with BUILD I am working with a small group of students on problem solving skills.  We work on solving story problems by using manipulatives, drawing pictures, and writing number sentences.  This is a chance for me to differ my instruction to fit your child’s needs.  Math problems will be given to your child based on what they need.
Science: We read the book A Tree for All Seasons.  We then made a poster showing an apple tree in each season.
